Fusion Pharmaceuticals is a newly formed biopharmaceutical company discovering and developing targeted alpha-particle radiotherapeutics for treating cancer.  Targeted alpha-particle emitting radiotherapeutics combine the precision of molecular targeting agents, such as antibodies, with the potency of alpha-particle emitting radioisotopes to specifically attack and eradicate cancer cells.

The newly created position of Scientist, Protein Engineering reports to the Director of Biology and is a key position in the organization with responsibilities associated with our internal drug discovery efforts.  This position will be responsible for providing protein engineering and purification expertise to cross-functional project teams focused on developing and translating targeted alpha-particle radiotherapeutics to the clinic.

Responsibilities:

  • Protein engineering, molecular biology, protein expression and purification techniques to support the development of radiolabeled biologics for molecular imaging and targeted radionuclide therapy (oncology)
  • Rational protein design including generation of multi-domain proteins with bispecific binding functionality and/ or half-life extension technologies and site-specific conjugation
  • Design of recombinant biologic expression constructs and optimization of protein expression/purification from mammalian and bacterial hosts
  • Develop assays to screen proteins for desired characteristics (e.g. stability, target discrimination, binding affinity)
  • Develop biologic lead optimization, including affinity maturation and preliminary developability
  • Serve as the protein science lead on various cross-functional projects
  • All other tasks related as assigned

Education/Experience:

  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemical engineering or related field with 3+ years of postdoc and/or industrial experience preferred
  • Strong background of recombinant protein expression, construct design and construction as well as expression / purification strategies for broad classes of proteins including alternative scaffold constructs and monoclonal antibodies
  • Experience with bacterial and mammalian cell based expression systems
  • Experience utilizing structural modeling and sequence analysis software for construct optimization, de-immunization, assessment of manufacturability and lead selection
  • Technical expertise should include molecular biology and protein biochemistry, protein purification (including FPLC), ELISA, biosensor, and/or other biochemical and cell based assays
  • Experience with bio-conjugate chemistry techniques is an advantage
  • Knowledge of expression library construction and screening an advantage
  • Experience with the safe handling of radioactive and potentially biohazardous materials
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills are required
